Guardian Rumour Mill

Tom Davies

Aston Villa fans have enjoyed a season that has surpassed all expectations. The flip side of all this though is that richer clubs sniff around your players with a little extra zeal. And so it is that Newcastle, Tottenham and Bayern Munich are all keen on adding Jacob Ramsey to their midfield ranks. The Athletic reports that, with Villa cognisant of the need to comply with financial fair play regulations, they might be tempted to sell the 22-year-old academy graduate, whom they value at £50m.

Bayern are, of course, in a title race for a change this year and the Bundesliga leaders, Bayer Leverkusen, are apparently contemplating a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Asensio to bolster their challenge. The Spain winger has made only seven league appearances for the perennial French champions since joining from Real Madrid and could be tempted by a move to Xabi Alonso’s side, according to Sky Sports Germany.

Manchester United fancy another striker, perhaps with a view to bringing their naughty existing ones into line, and Erik ten Hag is reportedly mulling a move for the Danish forward Martin Braithwaite. They would have to meet Espanyol’s release clause of £6m but Marca reckons United are tempted, even though, at 32, Braithwaite doesn’t particularly meet their apparent transfer policy criteria. They may also face competition from Chelsea, who are rarely shy at this stage of a window.

Staying with Chelsea, rumours suggest the Blues are keen on an audacious bid for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. They’d probably be looking at a fee of around £60m for the Canada left-back mind, and Manchester City and Real Madrid are reportedly circling too. There are also suggestions afoot that Chelsea would be prepared to listen to offers for Armando Broja in this window as they prepared to bring in a big-name striker in the summer, in a movie we may have seen before. Mauricio Pochettino is an admirer of Broja though, so may fight to keep him.

The Portuguese winger Jota has received plenty of mentions in this month’s gossip columns and here’s another one: West Ham are apparently ramping up their interest in the former Celtic playmaker, who left Parkhead for Al-Ittihad last summer but might be tempted to join the winter Saudi exodus. According to London’s Evening Standard, West Ham are minded to step up their interest in light of their struggles to get a deal for FC Nordsjælland’s Ibrahim Osman over the line. The Danish club seemingly want more than the £16m that’s currently on the table so Jota could be David Moyes’s Plan B.

And down at the bottom of the Premier League, Everton and Luton are tussling over a possible loan deal for Ajax’s Chuba Akpom. The striker banged them in for fun when at Middlesbrough and has scored a respectable five in 13 Eredivisie matches since his summer move to Amsterdam in a turbulent season for Ajax. But the Dutch club may take some persuading.

Lyon make offer for West Ham winger Said Benrahma

By David Ornstein

Lyon have made an offer of around £15million plus add-ons for West Ham United winger Said Benrahma.

The offer has not yet been accepted by West Ham, but Lyon believe Benrahma is keen on a move to the Ligue 1 side.

Lyon owner John Textor has been an admirer of the 28-year-old since his time at Brentford.

He has played just 615 minutes in the Premier League for West Ham this season, starting only six matches and providing zero goals and one assist in all competitions in 2023-24.

Benrahma was sent off in his most recent appearance for the club, a 1-0 loss to Bristol City in an FA Cup third-round replay.

“It made it much more difficult, that’s for sure,” said manager David Moyes of Benrahma’s dismissal. “It made it much harder and we were a goal down already at that point. I’ve had a look at it and I don’t think we can have any complaints. I wasn’t sure about the tackle on him… that might have been questionable.”

The Algeria international joined West Ham from Brentford on a permanent deal in 2021. His West Ham contract expires in 2026.

Lyon sit 16th in Ligue 1 following a disappointing campaign and are one point clear of the relegation zone, currently occupying the league’s relegation play-off spot.

Divin Mubama yet to agree contract extension with West Ham

By Roshane Thomas

Divin Mubama is yet to reach an agreement over a contract extension with West Ham United.

The 19-year-old is entering the final year of the deal he signed in October 2021, which does not include a one-year option. Discussions have been difficult due to demands from Mubama’s agent. The young forward changed his representative in 2023.

The England Under-20 international has rejected contract offers, but West Ham will not allow the youngster to leave this window. The club will decide in the coming weeks whether to offer Mubama an improved deal.

The forward has scored twice and made 14 appearances in all competitions this season. He has only played 18 minutes in West Ham’s last four league games, with manager David Moyes favouring Danny Ings.

“We really like Divin, he’s an East End boy and a West Ham supporter, a great lad, we love him to bits,” said Moyes. “I feel the best thing for Divin is to sign a contract at West Ham. He’s got competition in front of him but he’s only young. If I can get him more opportunities I will do.

“A lot of young players are getting impatient but the bigger problem is their agents want to take them away and get games elsewhere. So many are making the wrong decisions. There’s a few boys that have left here who have made incredibly wrong decisions. They’re in a great environment here. We’re a football club who want to put young players in.”

Midfield Dynamo Neuhaus on West Ham and Liverpool’s Radar

In the ever-competitive Premier League, the chase for top talent never ceases. The latest buzz comes from Team Talk‘s report on the highly regarded Borussia Monchengladbach star, Florian Neuhaus, who’s caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp and several English clubs. Here’s a closer look at the unfolding drama.

The central midfield maestro, Florian Neuhaus, has been pivotal for Gladbach since his arrival in 2017. At 26, his versatile ability to adapt to multiple midfield roles has made him a hot property. This versatility aligns perfectly with Klopp’s tactical ethos, which explains Liverpool’s interest in the summer of 2021. But with Liverpool’s midfield now bolstered by other talents, Neuhaus could be Premier League-bound with Aston Villa and West Ham United showing significant interest.
Neuhaus’ Potential Impact on English Shores

Neuhaus, a German international with ten caps to his name, not only brings skill but also a tactical flexibility, capable of slotting into the No 6, No 8, and No 10 roles. This adaptability could be transformative for either Villa or West Ham, both clubs looking to bolster their midfield options. The German’s big-game temperament was on display with a crucial last-ditch challenge for Gladbach recently, highlighting the attributes that have Premier League sides circling.

The Transfer Saga Continues

The plot thickens as VfB Stuttgart enters the fray, engaging in talks for a possible loan deal with an option to buy. However, with Premier League’s financial might, Villa and West Ham could overshadow Stuttgart’s bid. This saga could extend past January, giving these clubs ample time to prepare persuasive proposals to secure Neuhaus’ services.

Liverpool set sights on West Ham man Tim Steidten amid David Moyes whispers

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten is a leading contender to be the new Liverpool director of football, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside giants have begun their search for a recruitment chief to replace Jorg Schmadtke, who is leaving the club at the end of this month’s transfer window.

Steidten joined West Ham last summer and he was influential in an impressive window of work that featured the marquee signings of Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse.

The German, 44, is highly regarded in recruitment circles after his impressive work at Bayer Leverkusen, helping the club sign the likes of Florian Wirtz, Edmond Tapsoba and Jeremie Frimpong.

However, he has not always seen eye to eye over transfers with manager David Moyes and there have been well-sourced whispers of disagreements over targets and deals.

West Ham reach agreement with Jota

According to journalist Santi Aouna, West Ham and Jota have now reached an agreement over a London Stadium transfer. He adds that the Hammers and Al-Ittihad are holding “positive talks”, with the player waiting to travel to England.

Things haven’t exactly gone to plan in Saudi Arabia for the 24-year-old following a big-money transfer from Celtic. In total, he has only made 11 appearances for Al-Ittihad, playing just 511 minutes of action.

However, West Ham only have to look at his time in Scotland to see what an impressive player Jota is, with the winger netting 28 times and registering 26 assists in 83 Celtic games. Jota also came in for praise from Alan Hutton while at Celtic, with the former full-back waxing lyrical over the winger.

“He’s still developing. He’s probably only going to get better, I think he can get better. What he’s done this season has been incredible, for him to come from his parent club, where he’s not really been playing. Benfica are a big club in their own right but to come to another club where there’s a lot of pressure, to perform at such a young age, he’s stood up to that task.

“Jota’s that player fans want to see. He’s exciting, he takes people on, he makes things happen, he scores goals and ticks all the boxes.”

West Ham starlet Divin Mubama is a loan target for Dutch side FC Twente but the Hammers are loathe to part with the teenager with several key forwards out injured

West Ham striker Divin Mubama has attracted interest from FC Twente Enschede.

The Dutch side, currently third in the Eredivisie, are keen to take Mubama on loan. Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday have also made enquiries but West Ham are reluctant to let the 19-year-old leave this window.

Mubama has been used from the bench by manager David Moyes who wants cover for Jarrod Bowen and Danny Ings with Michail Antonio out injured.

Mubama is also out of contract in the summer and West Ham have yet to agree new terms though talks are expected to take place next month.

West Ham allowed Callum Marshall to join West Bromwich Albion on loan last week after he signed a new contract.

Ironically, Albion had previously asked for Mubama who is understood to be open to a loan move so that he can gain more regular game time.

West Ham are continuing talks with Al Ittihad over an 18-month loan deal for Jota while an opening £15million plus add-ons offer from Lyon for Said Benrahma is falling short of the club's valuation. Benrahma is also waiting to see what other offers come in.

Maxwel Cornet remains a target for Nottingham Forest.

West Ham talks for Nordsjaelland's Ibrahim Osman hit an impasse over their valuation but the 19-year-old is also a late option for Brighton and Brentford.

The latter have seen their move for Bruges winger Antonio Nusa stall amid concerns over his medical.

Brentford also hold an interest in Benrahma, as do Fulham.

West Ham secure winger’s verbal agreement from super-agent as talks progress over exciting 18 month paid loan deal

Super-agent informs West Ham about Jota deal

The Hammers dropped out of the race for Ibrahim Osman after having a £19m bid rejected by Nordsjaelland and put their full attention on Jota, getting his verbal agreement and the conditions of a deal from agent Jorge Mendes.

They have now moved into trying to complete a deal within the next 48 hours and talks are positive between parties.

Al-Ittihad want a large loan fee and that is the main point of negotiations. There are also some sources stating an option to buy will also be included.

Al-Ittihad signed Jota from Celtic in a deal worth £26 million, which broke the record for a sale in Scotland, but it has not been a happy move for the talented wide man.

He will be hoping that this move comes off and sees him show his ability and potential.
